Marks and Spencer Travel Insurance Review

When you buy Marks and Spencer travel insurance, you’re actually buying AXA travel insurance – this is the real provider of the policy, with the Marks and Spencer brand name on the front. So if you’re planning to sign up with M&S it’s worth doing some research into AXA at the same time.

Marks and Spencer’s travel cover provides a fairly comprehensive and rounded plan for the average UK traveller. That includes emergency medical cover up to 10 million pounds – you’l have a hard time finding a plan that covers you for more than that. Of course, although that number is impressive it’s not one of the most important criteria on which you should base your decision. Let’s take a closer look at what’s good and what’s not so good about M&S travel insurance.

What’s Covered?

As well as emergency medical cover, the plan offered by Marks and Spencer travel insurance covers accidents, cancellations, legal expenses and personal liability. This standard plan is somewhat more limited than many other providers who often extend their coverage to include possibilities like natural disasters. That said, personal liability and legal coverage is a fairly broad aspect of the Marks and Spencer plan which covers various possibilities that competitor plans leave out. The basic plan also covers you in case some of your belongings are lost or stolen. That includes passports and travellers’ cheques. Essentially, the plan covers most of the basics at a reasonable cost but this may not be sufficient for some travellers.

On top of the bare basics plan, you can also add optional extras for particular holiday types such as skiing adventures.

Age Limits

Unlike some other providers like Saga travel insurance who specialize in plans for the older generation, there are some age limits on Marks and Spencer’s policies. For single-trip plans the age limit is 80, or 70 if you’re heading to the US, Canada or the Caribbean. There’s no age limit on annual plans for most of the world, but again an age limit applies for travel to the US, Canada and the Caribbean (80 years old).

Online Discount

Most travel insurance providers provide discounts if you sign up online, but Marks and Spencer travel insurance offers a particularly generous 15% for online sign-ups. Most other UK providers offer a 5% or 10 % discount.

Extra Add-on for Hazardous Sports

While most travel insurance providers will offer add-ons to cover common leisure activities and things such as winter sports, Marks and Spencer’s insurance provides an add-on not often seen with competing companies. This is an add-on specific to “hazardous sports.” An example of a sport that might fall under this category would be mountain climbing. The add-on extends to other sports, but obviously you’ll need to check with M&S first to see if they’ll cover you for the sport or sports you intend to engage in while on your trip. Remember – the greater the risks involved, the more expensive the add-on is likely to be.
