Saga travel insurance is a provider which specializes in cover for people over 50. In the past they have exclusively catered to the older market, although recently they have introduced plans which are available to people under 50. If you’re over the age of 50 and based in the UK and you’re finding it hard to get coverage from a mainstream provider, Saga may be exactly what you’re looking for. Let’s take a closer look at what Saga offers and some of their possible weaknesses compared to competitors.
Specialist Over 50 Coverage
As already mentioned, the major selling point of Saga travel insurance is that it’s specifically designed for over 50s. In fact, there is no upper age limit with Saga’s coverage. As you may have guessed already, that also means many pre-existing medical conditions are covered under the standard Saga plan. Obviously, double check to see if any conditions you have are covered, and make a special request to include any condition you may have that isn’t covered in the standard plan.
Saga also make the sign up process relatively easy for people with medical conditions – you can do the whole thing privately online, which makes it a much more comfortable experience.
Apart from the medical side of things, the main advantages of Saga cover are protection against travel delays and cancellations as well as enforced stays (when you have to stay in your destination longer than planned due to cancelled travel). Saga is essentially a “quick and easy” form of basic coverage for over 50s. It’s kind of a no frills provider, giving you the essentials without some of the more comprehensive coverage other insurers offer like protection for natural disasters or rental vehicle damage. (They do offer cover for highjacking and mugging, but it’s a pretty paltry 50 pounds per day that you’re affected).
That said, Saga is by no means to be seen as a small provider. For single-trip insurance they can cover you anywhere in the world. Their annual plans also offer worldwide cover, but in some countries the length of cover is limited to 45 days. When travelling to the US or throughout Europe you have the option of 60 or 90-day cover if you want it.
They also offer very comprehensive coverage when it comes to things like emergency medical, covering up to 10 million pounds worth of medical costs. In other words, what they do they do well.
The downside? Because they cater to a market that often finds it difficult to get insurance, they charge slightly higher prices than the norm for the same type of coverage. Of course, if you’re over 50 and have pre-existing medical conditions, higher premiums are simply an unfortunate fact of life.
Extra Coverage for Sports Activities
Saga does offer a few potential add-ons that allow you to customize your plan. For instance, they offer some additional options for winter sports holidays, such as cover for your own (or hired) equipment. They also offer coverage specific to golf and scuba diving – worth a look if you’re heading to the Caribbean or the Florida Keys. Many other leisure activities are automatically covered under the standard policy.
Easy Customer Service and Claims
One thing Saga travel insurance customers regularly comment on is the speed and efficiency of the claims service and the reliability of the phone support. Saga operates a 24-hour phone support system which doesn’t use any automated menus – that means you get to talk to a real person in the UK when you’re in an emergency, rather than someone in an offshore call center or an automated message.
