Tesco travel insurance offers fairly affordable basic insurance options, especially if you’re buying a plan for your whole family. Tesco is a bank rather than a dedicated insurance supplier, so their insurance products are fairly limited in scope. They offer a basic single trip plan and an annual plan. However, one of the appealing aspects of Tesco travel insurance is that they’ve separated their plans into three layers based on affordability. If you’re very price conscious in your search for travel insurance, Tesco is probably worth a look with family plans starting from 2.30 pounds per day.
Three Cover Levels
The main distinctive feature of Tesco is their division of their plans into Value Cover, Standard Cover and Finest Cover. Let’s get into a breakdown of what each of these types of cover involves.
- Value – this is the basic, no frills policy. It has a one start rating from Defaqto.
- Standard – the name says it all – this plan includes all the standard coverage you’d expect from a travel insurance plan. It has a three star ratinf from Defaqto.
- Finest – this is Tesco’s top plan, with a five star Defaqto rating.
What Tesco Covers
These names and levels of coverage may give you the impression that Value and Standard Cover don’t actually cover much compared to Finest, but that’s not actually the case. Even the most basic Value plan includes coverage for trip cancellation and delayed departure, hospital fees, and coverage for the loss or theft of personal possessions and important items. All Tesco customers can also make use of the 24-hour help line from anywhere in the world.
The main differences between the plans come in things like the value of medical cover. For instance, Value covers you for up to 2 million pounds of emergency medical expenses. Standard covers you for up to 5 million pounds, and Finest covers you for up to 10 million pounds. The more expensive plans offer you higher coverage values for every category. Value Cover doesn’t include categories like loss of passport and legal expenses, and you don’t have the option to add winter sports cover.
Extras and Add-ons
Tesco travel insurance provides three options for extra cover. These are winter sports cover, golf cover and wedding cover. Not a huge range of activities, so unless one of these happens to be the main reason for your trip, there’s not a whole lot of point getting the extras. Other travel insurance providers have much more comprehensive plans for people who intend to engage in diverse and potentially dangerous activities while traveling.
Using Clubcard
One of the other appealing factors about Tesco insurance is the Clubcard benefits. You can use Clubcard vouchers to pay for your travel insurance with Tesco. Also, you can get a 5% discount on your whole plan if you’re a Clubcard holder. Now, this is not a huge discount compared to what some other insurance providers offer for online bookings, but if you’re a regular Clubcard user it does provide an incentive to sign up with Tesco.
